on one of the buses i accidentally forgot to touch on because i was spaced tf out, a few minutes go by and i immediately get interrogated. i tell the officer “i can just get off, or we can swipe it now. i usually swipe it getting off and i genuinely forgot.”

he immediately says, “no, you’re lying, i know the REAL REASON you didn’t swipe on.” then he asks for my address and room number and for proof that i live there. i eagerly comply, explaining i’m living in one of the unimelb residence halls so they never sent me an email with the exact room number, but happily showed him emails that the hall had sent me otherwise that were proof of residence.

this really pissed him off so i suggested he call the residence hall, he gets extremely angry at this suggestion and says if i dont find an email he’s going to arrest me.

my phone dies which infuriates him further, i have to get a laptop hotspot working (bless the officer who shared that with me), and he starts fuming and saying any minute they’re going to take me to the station and arrest me. “ive never had anyone try to evade me like this,” he says. “clearly you’re lying to me and you’ve been lying to me this whole time. those emails prove nothing.”

i tell him, sobbing and in complete tears and fearing for my life at this point, please call the hall and speak to them and ask where i live, i pull up in big font the number and he calls them and verifies that i do i indeed live where i claim to live. he hands me an infringement notice but he looks noticeably upset i wasn’t arrested???

honestly, thank GOD i was on the bus, because the woman who got on after me didn’t have a myki and she was a pregnant woman of color, i can’t imagine how they would have torn into her.

EDIT:

• Yes, it was my fault for forgetting to tap on, I take accountability for that. HOWEVER, he could have easily been like “Hey, can you tap on me for me?” (I was right up front next to the scanner) rather than escalating it to a scenario where I could be arrested. He also never actually scanned my Myki.

• I’ve had issues with authority being very confrontative and agressive with me before which is why this freaked me out. He was being aggressive — raised voice, degrading tone, cowering over me, multiple threats to arrest me, as well as writing down my room number on his hand with a pen (this may be what's most odd about the whole interaction, tbh), and demanding me to retrieve information in a way that was ineffective so that he could carry out his threat.

• I had no idea you could just walk away, I would have, but there were two other officers accompanying him, one of which looked like an actual police officer judging by his uniform. I don't know if I misunderstood the uniform but it was a black shirt with a black vest and not a T-shirt like the other AO. Or is this part of intimidation tactics?
